The Parade Fund committee of Reykjavík Pride and Landsbankinn has completed its review of this year’s grant applications and awarded funding to 10 entries, with individual grants ranging from ISK 50,000 to ISK 275,000. A total of ISK 2,765,000 was requested, while the fund has ISK 1,500,000 available for distribution annually.
The highest grant this year was awarded to the The LGBT youth center of Samtökin ’78 and Tjörnin (Hinsegin félagsmiðstöð S78 og Tjarnarinnar), for an ambitious and well-developed idea that the committee found both creative and socially important. One committee member remarked, “This is our future we are talking about,” and added, “It has never been more essential for queer youth to be visible and proud, especially when the world and society seem intent on pushing us all back into the closet.”
The committee also referred to recent studies indicating that queer youth today feel more afraid to come out than they did five years ago, highlighting the importance of visibility and empowerment in public spaces — such as the Pride Parade itself.
